How to Refresh Curly Hair After a Workout (No Rewetting)
How to Refresh Curly Hair After a Workout (Without Rewetting It)
If you've ever skipped a workout because you just did your curls and refuse to ruin them, I see you. And if you work out anyway, then spend the next hour slicking your hair back or completely rewashing it, I see you too.
Here's the thing: I work out almost every single day, and my hair still lasts five, six, even seven days. Working out and great curls are not enemies. You just need the right prep before you sweat and a simple refresh after. I'm walking you through exactly what I do for both, so you never have to choose between your workout and your hair again 💛
Quick answer: To refresh curly hair after a workout, protect it during your workout with a pineapple, bonnet, satin scrunchie, or banana clip. Afterward, use dry shampoo on your scalp if it feels greasy, then lightly mist a refresh spray on dry hair in sections using praying hands and scrunching. Do not rewet or rewash your hair.

How Do You Work Out With Curly Hair Without Ruining It?
There's no one right answer here. It really depends on where you're working out, how intense it is, and how long your hair is. Here are the options I actually use.
Wearing it down. When my hair was shorter, around shoulder length, I'd just wear it down for lighter workouts like walks. It wasn't in my face, it wasn't bothering me, done. Now my hair is really long, my workouts are more intense, and it's hot out, so down is not happening for me anymore.
Pineapple and bonnet (at-home workouts). If nobody is seeing you, this is honestly the best option. Some mornings I don't even take my bonnet off. I work out in the same pineapple and bonnet combo I slept in, shower, then take it all down. The bonnet soaks up sweat while your curls stay protected, which is exactly what we want. If you haven't nailed your nighttime setup yet, here's how I protect my curls while I sleep.
Satin scrunchie (in public). Tie your hair back and loop the scrunchie around just one time. Wrapping it over and over is what causes those creases.
Claw clip. I bring my hair all the way up and clip it. Is it the chicest look ever? Debatable. But I'm pretty type B about gym hair, and if you are too, a claw clip is great.
Banana clip. This is the one that actually keeps your hair looking good. Banana clips slide into your hair without pulling or grabbing, so your curls don't get stretched out the way they do with a slick back or a regular elastic 🙌
Is Sweat Bad for Curly Hair?
Nope. I get DMs all the time from girlies who sweat a ton, especially around the neckline, and they're panicking that they're wrecking their curls.
Sweat is actually totally fine. Sweat will not damage your hair. You might feel a little gross, but your curls are okay. And if you notice any smell (which you really shouldn't), a little hair perfume takes care of it.
What Should You Not Do After a Workout?
This is the part most people get wrong, so read it twice.
Do not:
- Rewet your whole head
- Rewash your hair
- Completely restyle from scratch
- Pile on a bunch of extra product
All of that actually damages your hair over time. And honestly, who wants to live that life? If you work out four or five days a week and fully redo your hair every time, that's basically a part-time job.
In the Barbie Delle Method, this is a hard rule for refreshing in general. A tiny bit of water is fine, but daily rewetting is what keeps you stuck needing to rewet daily. It holds you back from a true curl transformation.
How Do You Refresh Curly Hair After a Workout?
Two steps. That's it.
Step 1: Handle the scalp. If your scalp feels greasy or gross, grab a dry shampoo. Spray it on your scalp and the nape of your neck, anywhere the sweat collected, and rub it in. [INTERNAL LINK: dry shampoo for curly hair post. Skip for now]
Step 2: Do a simple refresh. And I mean simple. If your hair is healthy, your refresh should be quick and easy. If you feel like you need to do a ton to get it looking decent, that's a sign something else is off, which I'll get into below.

What Is the Best Curl Refresher Spray for After the Gym?
For post-workout, my pick is the Curl Keeper Refresh Next Day Styling Spray. It's formulated to refresh both your curls and your scalp, which is exactly what you need after sweating. That's literally why it exists.
What makes it work so well after a workout is the Himalayan salt. Salt soaks up moisture, so if you've got excess moisture sitting in your hair (hi, sweat), it helps absorb it while also helping spring your curls back up. Himalayan salt is especially good for soft Hair Finish™, but anybody can benefit from it.
It also has lightweight moisture so your curls don't feel dry and crunchy, plus a little bit of protein to help with bounce. And there are holding agents in there too, so your curls actually come back to life instead of just getting damp and flopping.
Texture-wise, it's super watery, not creamy at all. It comes out in the prettiest fine mist, which makes it really hard to overdo. If you want to see more of how I use Curl Keeper, here's another quick video on it.

How to Use Curl Keeper Refresh Step by Step
Exactly how you use it depends on the look you're going for, but this is what I do on dry hair:
- Section your hair. Start with the bottom section first.
- Spray lightly. You're not trying to make your hair damp, just get the product on it.
- Praying hands. Glide your palms down the section so the product actually gets into your curls.
- Scrunch.
- Repeat on every section: spray, praying hands, scrunch. Spray, praying hands, scrunch.
- Let it dry. Your hair will be the tiniest bit damp. Let it air dry, or diffuse if you want it done faster.
That's it. No rewetting, no full restyle, no 45-minute detour between the gym and the rest of your day ✨

Why Does My Hair Look Bad After Taking Out a Ponytail?
Real talk: if you pull your hair back, take it out, and it looks horrible, the ponytail isn't the problem. It usually means your hair isn't healthy yet.
How good your hair looks past wash day comes down to three things:
- Your hair's health level
- How good of a job you did on wash day
- Your sleep protection
When those three are dialed in, your curls can handle a ponytail, a workout, and a few days of life without needing much from you at all. Healthy hair has better elasticity, which is basically the spring in your curls, and that's what lets them bounce back. Bond builders and deep conditioners are huge here.
So all the tips in this post work best when you're actually implementing the rest of your routine too. That's the whole point of the Barbie Delle Method: build a routine that holds up on the easy days and the hard days 💕
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work out with curly hair every day?
Yes. I work out almost every day and my hair still lasts five to seven days. Protect it during your workout, skip the rewet afterward, and do a quick refresh instead of a full restyle.
Should I wash my curly hair after every workout?
No. Washing or fully rewetting after every workout damages your hair over time and keeps you stuck in a cycle of needing to redo it constantly. Use dry shampoo on your scalp and a light refresh spray on your curls instead.
What is the best hairstyle for working out with curly hair?
At home, a pineapple with a bonnet is the best option because the bonnet soaks up sweat. In public, a banana clip preserves your curls best since it doesn't pull or stretch them. A satin scrunchie looped once or a claw clip also work.
Does dry shampoo work on curly hair after the gym?
Yes. If your scalp feels greasy after a workout, spray dry shampoo on your scalp and the nape of your neck and rub it in. This takes care of the grease without touching your curls.
Can I use Curl Keeper Refresh on wet hair?
The way I use it is on dry hair, in sections, with a light mist. The goal is to refresh without making your hair wet, so a little goes a long way.
If your curls fall apart every time you sweat, it's usually a sign they need the right products for your specific hair, not more products. That's exactly what Curls Monthly is for.
