Do your curls feel crunchy, sticky, or limp after using gel? How to avoid top gel mistakes once and for all:

Mistake #1: Too much or too little water

  • Here's a little cheat sheet:
    • If your hair is naturally on the drier side, style on soaking wet hair
    • If your hair is not on the naturally dry side, style on less soaking wet hair (think: more damp)

Mistake #2: Being scared of using gel

  • Gels that leave your hair “crunchy” are actually not bad. This just means they have strong hold ingredients in them (which are actually so important for lasting definition)
    • If your gel leaves your hair crunchy, simply clap or scrunch the crunch and enjoy your lasting curls, ok?

Mistake #3: Not applying correctly

  • Some instructions even say “Apply to roots and bring down to ends.” Don't do this. Instead, start by applying to your ends, then mids, then roots. This will apply the most amount of product on your ends, which will help with root volume and so much more!

Mistake #4: Not applying correctly pt.2

  • Raking your gel will apply it evenly to your stands of hair, and likely give you more volume.
  • Scrunching will coat your mids and ends, but likely not evenly distribute your gel. But, it will give you some added definition!

Mistake #5: Layering gel at the end of your routine

  • Raking it in section by section, especially with a softer hold gel, will give more volume and better results than having gel be an “afterthought” and just scrunching at the end of your routine.

Mistake #6: Using the same amount of gel when air drying AND diffusing

  • You typically need more gel when you are diffusing! If you use the same amount of gel when air drying and diffusing, and wonder why you have tons of frizz after diffusing, you likely aren't using enough gel!
