How to style curly hair

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know we are some curl product junkies over here! We source the best of the best, so you can try the top brands and products in the business.

But, are the products the only thing that matters when it comes to our curl results? The answer is no. While products are extremely important, styling technique matters a heck of a lot too! That is why we have created a completely free styling guide just for you, customized with Curls Monthly product suggestions!

Styling Technique #1: Defined Routine

Step 1: Shampoo and condition as normal. Rinse conditioner out completely.

Product ideas: Imbue Curl Liberating Shampoo + Curl Respecting Conditioner from the December Mailer.

Step 2: Once you're out of the shower, use an ample amount of leave-in conditioner. Use your detangling brush to brush through.

Step 3: You will do this routine in 3 sections. Starting from the bottom section and working your way up to the top section. So, start with section one then repeat steps 4-6 on each section after that.

Step 4: Grab your Denman brush, and brush through this section of hair with the bristles facing outward. Put your hand on the other side of it to add tension. The goal is to create "lines" in your hair with the Denman brush.

Product Ideas: For small sections/ your bangs - you can grab your mini Denman brush from our August Mailer!

Step 5: Use praying hands to distribute the gel on this section.

Product Ideas: Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Gel from our April Mailer.

Step 6: Scrunch this section for 1 minute, adding in a little more gel.

Step 7: Repeat on 2nd and 3rd sections of hair.

Step 8: Microplop with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to begin the drying process.

Product Ideas: Reach for the Kitsch Microfiber towel in our October Mailer!
